Notes and Editorial Reviews

Jerry Hadley's relish for operetta is self-evident in this delicious survey of favorites and discoveries

There seems to have been a burst of Viennese operetta recitals recently, and it is sometimes difficult to resist the suspicion that the singers are simply ticking Viennese operetta off a list of what every singer should include in his or her repertory.

Such a suspicion never arises here. Rarely have I been struck so forcibly by a recitalist's obvious relish for this repertory. Among the classic numbers, you will be hard-pressed to find such a compelling outpouring of joy as in Kalmán's glorious 'Zwei Marchenaugen' from Die Zirkusprinzessin or such tender expressiveness as in Lehár's
Read more Frasquita serenade - both of them, as so much else here, Richard Tauber specialities. But the commitment of soloist and conductor is demonstrated perhaps even more by the unearthing of less familiar and never less than delightful material. We hear too little, for instance, from Lehár's Zigeunerliebe, happily represented here. Perhaps the happiest surprise of all is the lightly jazzy number from Meine Schwester and ich by Benatzky, the composer of White Horse Inn. There are others, too, in the two numbers by Korngold: Die Kathrin may usually be considered an opera rather than operetta, but its tenor solo is in no way out of place, while Das Lied der Lithe was a Johann Strauss compilation for Tauber and Berlin to which Korngold contributed the striking number here.

The astonishing thing is that these recordings were made in 1995. Where have they been? Delay no longer!
