| We don't need to spend too much time here. This is a good, well played, but not great performance of the original version of Ralph Vaughan Williams' A London Symphony, one that, as I pointed out in my earlier review of the CD edition, clearly demonstrates the wisdom of the composer's revisions (for that review, enter Q3309 in the search box). It also is not one of Chandos' better recordings, and multichannel remastering only exaggerates its obvious defects, adding reverb to what already was a blowsy sound picture, with anemic bass lines and some odd balances (such as the attack of the psycho snare drummer in the first movement). In addition, Chandos seems a bit too wedded (both here and in some other releases from this, its first batch of SACDs) to the center channel, collapsing the stereo image into the middle with the result sounding like a glorified monaural point source in louder passages. In sum, this isn't an audiophile success by any measure, and in fact, it's notably inferior to the original CD. Stick with that issue. --David Hurwitz, ClassicsToday.com | |||||
