Notes and Editorial Reviews

MONTEVERDI Vespro della Beata Vergine Jörg Breiding, cond; Knabenchor Hannover; Vox Werdensis; Himlische Cantorey; Concerto Palatino; Musica Alta Ripa RONDEAU ROP 7012/13 (2 CDs: 93:34 Text and Translation)

The two anniversaries marked here are an unusual coincidence, the 400th anniversary of the publication of this work in 1610 and the 1,000th anniversary of the parish church of St. Michael in Hidesheim, where the work was performed for this recording. The performing Read more groups assembled here are formed around the boys and men of Knabenchor Hannover, directed by Breiding, who succeeded founder Heinz Hennig in 2002. (Hennig recorded the work with soloists of Pro Cantione Antiqua in 1979, recently reissued on Alto.) Vox Werdensis is the chant schola that sings six antiphons. Himlische Cantorey makes up the group that sings the solos. The two instrumental ensembles combine to accompany the singing. The notes describe “a boys’ choir with boy soloists, as it had been available to Monteverdi in Venice,” suggesting a parallel to the three recordings cited in Fanfare 35:3, but the comparison is invalid, for there is only one boy soloist in the entire work, one of three singers in the hymn “Ave maris stella.” The other soloists include two women and a male alto of the Himlische Cantorey. This ranks with the moderately large ensembles on records, with 45 in the chorus and 18 players.

On its own terms, this is an elegant performance, executed on the highest level of singing and playing. It is the 24th version of this work to include chant antiphons (details of the many varied antiphons that are used in each version may be seen at chantdiscography.com, search: 1610). The choice of antiphons follows the modes of the psalms and canticle, as first proposed by Denis Stevens in his 1961 edition (the alternative is using a set of psalms from one of the Marian feasts, which makes sense liturgically but requires some transposition or other tinkering). Nothing is said about transposing chiavette, but the Lauda and Magnificat are taken down a third. Nothing is added (except the antiphons) or taken out of order. The strength of this performance is the even balance of fine qualities among the participants. Among competing versions, there are some excellent choices in the one-voice-per-part category, but among the rest this is a very satisfying choice.
