Notes and Editorial Reviews

"The ruling trio of the time, Caballé, Domingo and Milnes, are in excellent form. Caballé does her best to make a credible character out of the opera's conventionalized treatment of this supremely unconventional woman. She sings beautifully throughout, and at certain moments (the ending of the 'forest' aria, for instance, and her solo in the ensemble of Act 2) is sublime. Domingo, the voice at its loveliest and with the strong heroic steel already showing through, brings conviction if not subtlety to his unconvincing role. Milnes as the father who conscientiously denounces Joan and discovers his mistake too late has plenty of authority and, at forte, there is an exciting ring in his voice. Good work by the Ambrosian chorus and the LSO is a Read more further asset." -- Gramophone [11/1989], reviewing an earlier release Read less
