Notes and Editorial Reviews
That some of the pieces recorded here by the young organist Anders Eidsten Dahl (b. 1976) are among the finest in organ literature is not a controversial claim. We hear the magnificent masterpiece Prelude and Fugue in A Minor, Wo0 10, which Dahl performs with precise articulation, adapting it well to the moderate acoustics of the church nave. But the recording includes as well heartfelt chorale preludes, for example, one based on Lo How A Rose E'er Blooming. It is as though the Brahmsian chromatic language enshrouds the melody in thin harmonic silk, and only the most assiduous listener will glimpse the hymn through the veil.

Johannes Brahms (1833-1897), plus a lesser known work of Clara Schumann. The organ works of Brahms have often been overlooked, yet are regarded as important in the composer's musical development. At a time when concert halls more and more featured opera and high-flown piano playing, the organ works show the high regard Brahms had for Bach and counterpoint. And they are a key to understanding how he so expertly integrated classical elements into his otherwise Romantic orchestral, instrumental, and vocal works. Particularly noteworthy are the two variants of "Prelude and Fugue" in A Minor and G Minor, respectively. Here we meet a Brahms who now and again is capable of creating the rich sonority found in the better organ works of the master Bach. Here we find music with power and vitality elegantly interpreted by Anders Eidsten Dahl. The remainder of the album perhaps confirms that Brahms did not stake everything on composing for organ. The CD as a whole gives a good impression of his limited production in this sphere. Anders Eidsten Dahl (b. 1976) has an active career as concert organist, both as organ soloist and chamber musician in Norway and abroad. On this recording he demonstrates why he was the recipient of the Government Grants for Younger and Newly Established Artists in 2011 and 2012.
