The subtleties are so persuasive and the entire approach so considered, you will be revelling in every note of the music.
The opening of the First Concerto rather sits back on its haunches in this performance, and for all the subtle virtues of Bronfman's playing there is little of the blood-on-the-keys fanatical edge that would make you sit up and take notice.
But that is not the abiding impression of this issue. For one thing the subtleties are so persuasive, the articulation so clean and the entire approach so considered and idiomatic that Bronfman starts to convince on his own terms. conclusion it is simply bursting with life and colour. And Mehta and the orchestra, hitherto rather passive-sounding, are sparked into action—hear the trombones at the clinching of C major in the final pages.
The Fifth Concerto is also a triumph. Bronfman's way with the lolloping second movement is as enthralling as Ashkenazy's more garish extremes, and although Previn and the LSO constantly outdo their Israel counterparts for pointed characterization, the new recording had me revelling in every note of the music.
