Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is simply the finest Strauss orchestral music collection ever assembled, the benchmark by which all others are still judged. There are no weak performances at all, including the concertante pieces, and if in the larger tone poems (Ein Heldenleben, for example) Kempe seems to underplay the more heavily scored episodes, this always serves to underline the music's larger continuity and coherence. Most of the time, he's simply exciting as hell, nowhere more so than in Don Juan and Till Eulenspiegel, and of course no

The playing of the Staatskapelle Dresden is beyond praise in terms of its understanding of the idiom, and EMI's recordings, though a bit variable, were excellent for their day and still sound so now. A treasure.

The Ultimate Strauss June 12, 2012 By Joseph A. (Media, PA) See All My Reviews "This album contains all the essential Strauss orchestral works (save the Four Last Songs) in magnificent performances. Kempe's recordings have always been considered the ne plus ultra by devoted Strauss fans. While the sound of the original LPs was good, the remastering for this CD set provides a demonstration quality sound experience. Some highlights: (1)The building up to the climax in "Death and Transfiguration" is hair raising. (2)"Ein Heldenleben" is full of energy in beautiful sound. (3)"Metamorphosen" is positively shrouded in mystery from start to finish. While von Karajan's performances are excellent, I believe Kempe's rise to an even higher level. If you like Strauss don't pass up this superlative set." Report Abuse
