Notes and Editorial Reviews

KREBS Complete Organ Works John Kitchen (org) PRIORY 400 (6 CDs: 449:42)

This is a boxed reissue of six CDs recorded separately, each on a different organ in England and Scotland, in 2000 and 2001. The original issue numbers of the single discs were 734–39; the original packaging, including booklets and full-sized jewel boxes, is retained here.

My general impression is that Krebs was indeed a fine pupil of Bach, though in direct comparison something seems missing. The Read more liner notes to Vol. 1 explain some of this: Krebs’s Clavierübung, a fairly small collection compared to that of his teacher, consists of chorales in simple, manual-only arrangements. One assumes that, since they were designed for mass consumption and popular use, Krebs simplified the technique somewhat. But there’s more to it than that. Krebs does not often create what I’d call fully developed melodic lines, but rather short melodic fragments. In this respect, he was at least a century and a half ahead of his time, but within the framework of Baroque music it makes his themes sound not only terse but very forgettable. Now, mind you, J. S. Bach wasn’t exactly a hit tune writer (well, OK, there were exceptions), but by and large his melodies are much longer and more is filled in. By using so many terse themes (the mind scarcely registers them as melodies per se), Krebs brings our attention to the contrasting themes and counterpoint, for instance in the excellent Prelude and fugue in F Minor in Vol. 1 and the various fugues that follow, and when he does use a recognizable melody (such as the chorale prelude Vom Himmel hoch ), one comes to really admire his skill in creating a mood as well as boldly embellishing it with countermelodies and figuration in the left hand.

John Kitchen is a technically excellent organist with a fine sense of line who creates excellent moods. Judging from the few really outgoing pieces in Krebs’s oeuvre, he’s not the most exciting or scintillating of organists, but in unfamiliar music such as this, I do appreciate his consistent clarity of inner voices and lyrical warmth. Some of Krebs’s organ music has been recorded by others. Organist Beatrice Weinberger, for instance, is supposedly recording the complete organ works of Krebs for the Motette label, but this seems to have died out after only three issues (numbered, strangely enough, Volumes 1, 3, and 7!) of which the last, a two-CD set (so there are actually four CDs of Weinberger playing Krebs), was issued in 2008. If you are a lover of Baroque organ music or a student of same, you will be fascinated by most of this quite excellent music and impressed with Kitchen’s excellent performances.
