Notes and Editorial Reviews

In this fascinating political satire, lessons learned through animal personification is the creation of the world that is Le Bestiaire, ingeniously depicted by soprano Céline Ricci and her pianist and collaborator, Daniel Lockert. In this collection of songs by Jeanne Herscher Clément, Henri Sauguet, Jacques Ibert, André Caplet, Gabriel Grovlez, and Déodac de Séverac, the base concepts of humanity are depicted by the words of René de Brimont, Paul Éluard, Charles Baudelaire, Jean de la Fontaine, and Prosper Estieu.

R E V I E W:

What a unique program this is! The songs are fascinating and very rarely heard. Céline Ricci’s French pronunciation Read more is excellent and her clear diction makes her songs easy to understand. But she does not have a great deal of tonal variety and occasionally lapses into an overly wide vibrato on longer notes.

Henri Sauguet (1901–89) composed Les Animaux et leurs hommes (The Animals and Their Humans) in 1921 to poetry by the surrealist Paul Éluard. His songs Le Chat I and Le Chat II were written in 1938 as part of his cycle of six melodies on symbolist poetry. Déodat de Séverac (1872–1921) was an aristocrat from Toulouse. Since he loved the musical traditions and language of that area, his songs were often settings of verses written in the local language, Provençal.

Jacques Ibert (1890–1965) is the best-known composer featured on this disc. His F?-Major piano piece from Histoires, “Le Petit âne blanc,” is for piano alone, as is Gabriel Grovlez’s Les Ânes . Daniel Lockert’s idiomatic playing is a pleasant momentary change from Ricci’s rather colorless singing.

Gabriel Grovlez (1879–1944) was a pupil of Gabriel Fauré and wrote a great deal of neoclassical vocal music. Andre Caplet (1878–1912) was the winner of the 1901 Prix de Rome and a close friend of Claude Debussy, some of whose work he orchestrated. His Trois Fables set animal poems by the famous 17th-century French writer Jean de la Fontaine. Jeanne Herscher-Clémént (1871–1941) is best known today for her piano transcriptions of Bach’s organ music. As with the work of many women composers, her compositions were not often given the recognition they deserved. It has taken a long time for them to resurface, too. For La Bestiaire du Paradis she set poems by Renée du Brimont in a modern form somewhat reminiscent of a medieval description of the beasts of the earth. On two of Herscher-Clémént’s songs, “Le Coq et la poule” and “Les Martins-Pêcheurs,” tenor Allan Palacios Chan is a welcome addition to the mix.

Ricci’s voice is always placed in the forefront because of the style of the accompaniment. If the piano’s part were less sparse, it might have covered some of Ricci’s vocal flaws. This, however, is a wonderful collection of songs we do not hear from other sources.
