Notes and Editorial Reviews

LASSUS 15 vocal works Bruno Boterf, dir; Ludus Modalis MUSIQUE EN WALLONIE MEW 1158 (56:14 Text and Translation)

This program of five motets, eight Italian songs, and two chansons forms the first of five discs that will illustrate the life of Orlandus Lassus (c.1531–94), the last and greatest of a line of Franco-Flemish composers who dominated the musical life of Western Europe for a century and a half. Some call him the greatest composer of his generation, since his output is Read more more diverse than that of Palestrina and certainly that of Victoria. Lassus composed 58 Masses, well over 500 motets, and hundreds of songs in four languages. This first period of his life extends to 1556, the peripatetic years that ended with his appointment at the court of Munich. Almost all of these pieces were published in 1555 and 1556, and the notes offer an excellent and readable chronology of these years. The wonder is that his output will be exemplified in this “musical biography” in the course of less than five hours, surely only a sampling.

This selection is valuable for its illustration of the varied forms that the composer had published by the age of 25. One of these motets was recorded long ago, Peccavi quid faciam tibi (a text from Job, though not one of the later set of nine lessons), and Audi dulcis amica was recorded more recently by Detlef Bratschke. The secular works are harder to track down, but a quick check of the current Bielefelder Katalog shows only En espoir vis . Hence this gives us an unaccustomed hearing of the earliest works published by the composer. The singing of the six-member ensemble (Bruno Boterf is one of the six) is elegant, beautifully balanced, and expressive. It will be interesting to see how the other four programs unfold as the prolific composer’s work is summed up on five discs. The package is of normal size, but it is a bound book of 54 pages very attractively laid out. Recommended for Lassus lovers.
