Notes and Editorial Reviews

This recording was made on cellos by Montagnana (1740) and Guadagnini (1745).
The cello is perhaps the most beloved of all string instruments, and with this excellent compilation of works, CELLO WORLD magnificently reveals the immense range of this instrument. The CD opens with Isserlis' spirited arrangement of a jaunty piece from Beethoven, 'Andante con variazioni,' originally scored for mandolin and harpsichord. Debussy's youthful "Scherzo," is full of romantic bravado but with just a hint of the composer's later impressionist style.
Dvorák's "Romantic Piece," best known in its version for piano and violin, has the feeling of a lament which is curiously at odds with the composer's otherwise optimistic outlook. David Popper's
Read more 'Dance of the Elves' rounds out Isserlis' tribute to Czech composers with a relentless and very difficult cello part. Perhaps the most provocative piece is the CD's final selection, 'Inner World,' a recent work by the Australian composer Carl Vine. Despite the piece's electronic backdrop (with all the sounds emanating from the cello), it is a thoroughly musical piece and a fitting conclusion for this adventurous CD. Read less
