Notes and Editorial Reviews

The warmly resilient playing of Menuhin's Bath players capture the spirit of the music admirably.

When finally withdrawn from HMV's fullprice label this had dominated the catalogue, until Marriner's ASMF/Argo recording appeared, and even then could hold its own, for Menuhin's freshness and warmth conveyed the music's breadth without inflation. Those who rejoice in the 'preauthentic' way of performing Bach will find that Menuhin's readings and the warmly resilient playing of his Bath players capture the spirit of the music admirably.

The canons and canonic fugue
Read more are played by Yehudi Menuhin, Elaine Shaffer, Archie Camden, Kinloch Anderson... All play with a keen sense of style, and they infuse the music with lively phrasing and ornament when properly required, so that the listener tends to forget (as indeed he should) that this music is for the most part cerebral and even mechanical. Bach's canons are no less mechanical than those set forth in textbooks of counterpoint, but they are so skilfully contrived that the music counts for infinitely more than the mechanism. The canon in contrary motion and the one in augmentation and contrary motion are proofs of this, and the deeply felt performances given here show how the music has affected the performers. Kinloch Anderson's playing of the opening Ricercar a 3 is masterly: the tempo is just right, and the triplet sections are given their full weight. My personal favourite is the Trio Sonata, which is here given a most impressive performance by Menuhin, Shaffer, Anderson, and an unnamed 'cellist (?Derek Simpson). The nobility and pathos of the slow movements and the sleek, finely controlled fioriture of the two Allegros are all brought out as I have never heard them before, and the recorded sound, especially in stereo, is remarkably lifelike.
