Notes and Editorial Reviews

Boris Christoff liked to do double (and even triple) duty in his opera recordings. He sang the three principal bass roles in Boris Godunov twice, both Prince Galitsky and Khan Konchak in EMI's 1966 Prince Igor, and, given the chance, he likely would have done both Dosifei and Prince Ivan Khovansky in Khovanshchina. He was one of the greatest basses of the century as well as a great singing actor. As Khan Konchak, the Polovtsian leader whose forces defeat Igor's Russian army, Christoff is lusty, purposeful, dominant, and larger-than-life, a characterization perfectly suited to his rich, dark voice. For the presumably younger Prince Galitsky, the brother-in-law whom Igor leaves in charge in his absence, Christoff adopts a lighter, almost Read more baritonal timbre. He leaves little doubt about Galitsky's self-aggrandizing amorality and venality. This reviewer has never heard better performances of either part.

Tops in every way ! April 27, 2014 By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "This recording is the best ever. Every soloist is excellent and the fidelity of the transfer to disc is great. The over all performance is one that leaves the listener wanting more. The excitement and drama are palatable in every scene. Having the great Bass of Boris Christoff in more that one role makes it even more exciting. His portrayals are distinctly different for each character. This disc even outshines the recent Met revival in musical presentation." Report Abuse
