Notes and Editorial Reviews

Elliott Carter's Clarinet Concerto is an exciting and dramatic work that utilizes the full range of the orchestra, but broken down into five different groups. This technique allows the soloist, in this case Alain Damiens who gives a bravura performance, to "travel" from group to group in order to explore the varying timbres of each ensemble. Steve Reich's 'New York Counterpoint' utilizes the prerecorded loops of ten clarinets (played by the soloist) along with the soloist playing "live." The piece is a cunning work from the minimalist school in that its repetitions become slightly off kilter thus yielding a dislocated counterpoint that arises out of the overlapping motifs. 'Tephillah' by Howard Sandroff consists of three linked movements Read more with titles drawn from Hebrew liturgical practices. The sound world of this meditative piece is unique in that the reverberations and echoes created by the electronics serve to extend the sound effects of the soloist. The closing piece, 'Gnarly Buttons' by John Adams, is the antithesis of the austere formalism of Carter. A neo-tonal composition filled with great humor, 'Gnarly Buttons' utilizes banjos, allusions to Benny Goodman, and even the sound of a mooing cows to depict the essence of the American melting-pot.
