Notes and Editorial Reviews

It's a pity that the music of Wilhelm Stenhammar is not as well known as that of his fellow Scandinavians Edward Grieg, Carl Nielsen, and Jean Sibelius. Stenhammar's most well-known work is the song "Sverige" (Sweden), which serves as the country's unofficial national anthem. His orchestral music is deeply influenced by romantic composers like Brahms and, in the Symphony No. 2, Anton Bruckner. The Symphony is the central work on this revelatory recording by Paavo Järvi and the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
The Symphony was composed between 1911 and 1915, and it's grand in conception and decidedly romantic in spirit. The grand first movement, based on a Medieval tune, and elegiac andante second movement are stirring. The
Read more Brucknerian scherzo third movement is energetic, while the finale is an enormous fugue on folk tunes. The remainder of the recording focuses on two songs, gloriously sung by Anne Sofie von Otter, and two orchestral works: 'Reverenza' and the Symphonic Overture 'Excelsior.' Järvi and company live and breath this music and bring tremendous excitement to the program. This is an ideal recording for listeners who want to experience a lesser-known giant from the North.  Moving Performance February 24, 2012 By bess holloway (Boulder, CO) See All My Reviews "Prior to hearing this recording, I had only listened to a piano album of Stenhammar's music. The effect was immediately impressive, the second hearing completely absorbing. My appreciation of Wilhelm Stenhammar has grown deeper with this definitive performance." Report Abuse
