A Melancholic Second April 1, 2016 By owen  r. (lakewood, CA) See All My Reviews "This 1973 recording by Previn and the LSO ''dominated the catalog for over a decade in the analogue era. Its passionate intensity combines freshness with the boldest feeling '' (Penguin Guide). EMI reissued this on CD in 1999 as one of its Great Recordings Of The Century series; it is this iteration that I have enjoyed over the years. This is a fine performance and despite its age and provenance, it is a pretty good recording. The Penguin Guide states that ''this remains a classic account.'' Previn/LSO bring out Rachmaninoff's Russian melancholy, especially in the first and third movements-- it oozes out of the strings like sweet syrup between the waffles! I would not hesitate to recommend this reissue by Warner except for two reasons: First is the $16- price for this old recording. As I recall EMI had it mid-priced at around $10-. Second, and not entirely unrelated to the first, is the ''new'' recording on Alto with Rozhdestvensky and the LSO which is a very good performance and recording at a budget price.
