a charming survey... May 11, 2016 By Byrwec Ellison (Fort Worth , TX) See All My Reviews "Another of those gems of native Czech music from the Supraphon vault, mostly recorded in the ‘70s. Pianist Rauch, who died in 1996, was a Chopin specialist and Novák pupil who taught piano at the Prague Conservatory for 40 years – and his charming survey is easily the first and last word on Novák’s piano music. The composer – best known in his own country for nostalgic orchestral tone poems “In the Tatras,” “Of Eternal Longing” and his epic “Pan” symphony – was a lifelong Romantic. The heart and substance of this album is his dramatic Sonata Eroica (1900) and the original piano version of “Pan” (1910) – in Rauch’s hands, a dreamy, almost Impressionist tour de force. The rest of this beautiful set – chiefly suites of miniatures – is less consequential but is no less easy on the ears." Report Abuse
