Notes and Editorial Reviews
Julian Wachner’s Triptych for Organ and Large Orchestra was commissioned by Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Montreal in celebration of its 100th anniversary in 2004. Triptych was recorded at Saint Joseph’s Oratory. The building itself, with its magnificent dome, overlooks Mont Royal — from which the city of Montreal derives its name. The main basilica situated at the peak of the structure, boasts a reverberation time of over 5 seconds and is almost two football fields in length! All of these background elements influenced Julian Wachner for the composition of this Triptych for Organ and Large Orchestra.
Julian Wachner is one of North America’s most exciting and versatile musicians, sought-after as conductor, composer, and keyboard
artist. In his new position as the inaugural Director of Music and the Arts at Trinity Wall Street, Wachner serves as Principal Conductor of the Trinity Choir, Trinity Baroque Orchestra, and of NOVUS NY, the contemporary music orchestra in residence at Trinity Wall Street. This appointment complements his existing roles as Music Director of the Kennedy Center’s GRAMMY® Award-winning Washington Chorus and as Principal Conductor of Opera McGill, Montreal.
R E V I E W S:
Wachner is both an unapologetic modernist and an open-minded elclectic, but his music has something to say. Each concerto requires patience and investment from the listener, but the careful pacing and colorful orchestration make for a big payoff. Some of that, of course, has to do with the performances - all excellent. Both soloists and orchestras play with professionalism and artistic conviction.

Sparked by multiple talents of composer-conductor Julian Wachner, this disc succeeds on all fronts! In Triptych...organist Philippe Bélanger and Montreal’s Orchestre Métropolitain offer an exciting, insightful performance... Wachner’s eclectic Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra receives loving treatment... Andrews’ clarinet manages to be Coplandesque, jazzy, klezmerish and more in the expressive introduction and motoric allegro. Highly recommended.
