Notes and Editorial Reviews

"Pérez was born in Madrid in 1977. He began his pianistic studies in Spain; eventually he moved on to Cologne to study with Pierre-Laurent Aimard, before returning to Spain for the tutelage of Alicia de Larrocha, among others. Pérez is a romantic player, favoring the lyrical aspects of this music over the rhythmic or even dramatic ones. Sometimes this gets in the way of the music, as with the opening Los requiebros, which sounds fussier than it needs to. Where the music is lyrical, however, in the famous Quejas, ó la maja y el ruiseñor for example, he is at home. The gorgeously muted melody rises above the cascades of arpeggiated notes underneath. The nightingale’s fluttering at the end is a bit too Read more drawn-out and too articulate, but this little detail does little to mar the overall effect of his playing here. The concluding Epílogo, serenata del espectro, is one of the gems of the set. The pianist is attentive to details of articulation and phrasing, though certain sections are sluggish at times—some of the energico that Granados calls for is more muted than it could be. The section beginning around 6:00 (marca il canto dolcemente) is gorgeous, though: the melody cuts through the surrounding accompaniment while maintaining a pale shimmer. The ominous closing page is brought to a beautiful conclusion. Pérez gives us two interesting fillers: a solo piano version of the Intermezzo from the opera Goyescas, used to separate the two books of the piano suite, simple and melodic and charmingly played here; the Valses poéticos are touchingly performed—one can see that the pianist loves this music..."
