Notes and Editorial Reviews

This set is specially put together both for collectors and those who are new to the music of Delius. For collectors, for the first time, Decca brings together all these fine recordings into one great value box set. For newcomers to Delius, this box set is the perfect introduction to Delius’s music, containing all of Delius’s major works, and is a great introduction to this elegant English composer.??

This box sets combines the major orchestra & choral works of Brigg Fair, Sea Drift, In a Summer Garden, Florida Suite, The Walk to the Paradise Garden, Piano Concerto, Violin Concerto, Paris along with the major chamber music, such as the Cello Sonata, String Quartet and 4 Part Songs. The set culminates in Delius’s

R E V I E W:

The main attraction of this set is the fact that it contains all of Charles Mackerras’ Delius recordings for Decca/Argo, certainly the finest series devoted to this composer since Beecham’s days. Most of the major choral and orchestral works are here, including Sea Drift, and the best-ever recording of Appalachia. Notably missing are Eventyr and A Mass of Life, and Paris is offered in a “Historical Bonus Recording” (code for scruffy-sounding mono) featuring Anthony Collins and the early-1950s, not-very-good London Symphony Orchestra. Mackerras actually recorded Paris, but for EMI. You also get the Mackerras version of A Village Romeo and Juliet, which is all the Delius opera that most listeners will ever need. In short, eight CDs of Delius serves both the composer and the collector very well, and it’s good to have these recordings back. Get them while you can.
