Notes and Editorial Reviews

The most important turn-of-the century American composer was, of course, Charles Ives; here, American Classics necessarily offers known repertory. If another composer roughly of Ives's generation comes within hailing distance of the visionary Connecticut curmudgeon, it is not MacDowell or Beach or Chadwick but Charles Tomlinson Griffes. Naxos again renders invaluable service, with the complete piano works on two CD's (8.559023, 8.559046) and an orchestral disc to come.

"A white-hot 1950's recording by the late William Masselos should have made the piece a repertory staple, but (this being America) nothing much happened. It is tailor-made for volcanic Russian virtuosos; perhaps they will get to it first. Naxos' pianist is Michael Lewin, whose Griffes performances are dedicated and polished."
