Notes and Editorial Reviews

This is a distinguished issue and a welcome reminder of an artist of whom we have heard far too little in recent years. Fleisher's Ravel is beautifully moulded, with a fine rhythmic snap when needed, and his Prokofiev and Britten are comparably sensitive and finished. Combine that with high-class orchestral support and splendid recorded sound and you have what has to be a highly recommendable disc.

OLD? NOT ON YOUR LIFE! December 17, 2015 By Zita Carno (Tampa, FL) See All My Reviews "I got this recording some time ago because I wanted to see just what Fleisher was doing with the Ravel. It was an eye-opener. The blues march in the middle---and it is a real blues march---put me in mind of the one composed and performed by jazz tenor saxophonist Benny Golson, and even with my miserable right knee I had to get up and march to it! It was that good. The rest of the album is no less magnificent, and I do wish Ozawa would come out of hiding and do some more of that terrific conducting he's always been known for. Absolutely fabulous on all counts, and Fleisher, whether with one hand or two, is one of my favorites. Old recording? Not on your life!" Report Abuse
Brilliant high points of the piano left-hand repe July 2, 2014 By Arthur Leonard (New York, NY) See All My Reviews "I purchased this rather old recording after recently reading Leon Fleisher's autobiography, My Nine Lives, and deciding to fill out my collection of his recordings with missing items. This one is a great investment, prime Ozawa/BSO accompaniments and Fleisher flying high in the most important items of the piano-left-hand concerto repertory. Excellent sound, high entertainment value." Report Abuse
