Notes and Editorial Reviews

A pupil of Maria Ivogun and Erna Berger, Streich had the same pearly tone and faultless technique as her teachers and added to it a peculiarly elegiac timbre all her own, perhaps deriving from her Russian forebears. As she was also adept in several languages, she was formidably equipped to sing the eclectic repertory on this CD, drawn from her enormously popular LPs of the 1950s. In, among others, Johann Strauss, Dvorak (a bewitching ‘O silver moon’, in Czech), Dinorah’s Shadow Song, Flotow’s ‘Last Rose of Summer’, Verdi’s ‘Spazzacamino’, she delights the ear from start to finish. Highly recommended, this true Original.
