When Glenn Gould planned his American debut in 1955 he put together a program that would be unusual enough to attract attention yet still consist of pieces he liked. There was Webern and Sweelinck and Bach, but over the years Gould remained the oddball, recording pieces by composers you didn't even know wrote piano music, and he remained ever faithful to Schoenberg, Berg and Webern, not to mention Ernst Krenek, whose Sonata would be unknown were it not for Gould's advocacy.

His personality comes across in recordings like no other artist's. When you hear another great pianist's disc, you think "that's a great performance of..." but when you hear Gould you think "oh, it's Glenn" and for a few minutes an eccentric, amusing friend has dropped in to liven up your day.
