Notes and Editorial Reviews

Legendary piano master Richter imparts these three sonatas with all the intensity and intellect that made his playing famous.

“Orchestral solidity of sound makes the first movements immediately impressive. But the true scaling of heights comes in the slow movement of the C major [No. 3] — a colossal psychodrama here — and, unexpectedly, in the shadowy third movement of the E flat [No. 4]. The Op. 90 Sonata [No. 27] is mellower, never to the point of actually smiling, but unobtrusively responsive to the direction of Beethoven's thought. Only a select few pianists are so in touch with Beethoven the awe-inspirer; and of those is there any who can match Richter for sustained intensity and will-power?” (Gramophone)

Sonata #27, second movement January 6, 2015 By Henry Cohen (Baltimore, MD) See All My Reviews "I bought this CD for Sonata #27 (which has only two movements). I'd never heard #27 before and bought it to complete my collection of Beethoven's piano sonatas. He composed it in 1814; it is the last of his middle-period piano sonatas, just two before the Hammerklavier, which is #29. What a surprise it was for me--the polar opposite of the Hammerklavier! It is a simple Schubertian piece, with, in the second movement, perhaps the loveliest melody Beethoven ever composed. My only problem with #27 is that, when I listen to the second movement, I cannot get it out of my head for days. I know nothing of how Beethoven came to write such a piece at this time of his life."
