Billed as “a concerto for DJ and orchestra,” Anthony De Ritis’ Devolution is a dynamic mash-up of a contemporary take on Ravel’s “Bolero” and hip-hop, or more specifically, turntables, manned by DJ Spooky (Paul D. Miller). Drawing also from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, Devolution succeeds in marrying these two seemingly antithetical genres. Robert Kirzinger writes, “Spooky’s deconstruction (or devolution) intensifies the displacement of the familiar Ravel; the listener is both comforted by that familiarity and made uneasy by the new surroundings.” BMOP/sound is thrilled to present this new release, which also features two earlier works, Legerdemain and Chords of Dust, as it showcases the BMOP musicians at peak energy, led by Gil Rose.
