Sir Adrian Boult (1889–1983) gave three symphonic premières of Vaughan Williams and recorded the symphonies twice. Here, in vintage 1960s stereo from Kingsway Hall and Abbey Road, are the finest fruits of his Indian summer in the recording studio. Composer and conductor, matched to measure, share in sound a vision of humanity and hard-won experience transcendent over half a century: from Whitman and the Sea Symphony to the last, late wintry wordless music of Scott of the Antarctic and Thomas Hardy.

Read more of 85. (The Fifth Symphony is an untidy straddler, since it was begun in 1938 but not completed until 1943; much of its music, however, belongs to the inter-war period, as we shall see.) During the first 35 years of Vaughan Williams’s life, the leading British symphonists were Stanford and Parry, both of whom were his teachers; but it would be a bold critic who could detect their influence when it comes to VW’s orchestral music. We can, however, detect a general influence of Elgar—The Dream of Gerontius (1900) in particular, rather than the two symphonies of 1908 and 1911—on the composer of A Sea Symphony (1903–9) and A London Symphony (1910–13).
