Notes and Editorial Reviews

...Ameling [is] delightful in all..., not least the lovely setting of Tell me where is Fancy bred? which Poulenc wrote for the Countess of Harewood with the dedication `To Miles and Flora'... La fraicheur et le feu is a marvellous composition in the form of a cycle but all from a single poem. The piano part ranges in a masterly fashion from the dramatic turbulence of a Chopin Etude to the simplicity of a lute-song accompaniment... Still, regally as [Jessye] Norman's voice rings forth [in her recording with Irwin Gage], Parker's is the better singing, both in the communication of feeling and the fineness of legato... Happily, all the remainder of his work for the edition is retained, and this includes some of the most attractive of the sets, Read more Calligrammes and Banalites, as well as the exquisite Rosemonde.

The beauty of that song and Parker's singing is enhanced by the sequence in which it is placed between performances by...Michel Senechal and Gerard Souzay. All have artistic merits... Senechal is at his best in the comical Quatre chansons pour enfants...

Ground-breaking then, still great now February 1, 2013 By R Gregory Capaldini (Arlington, VA) See All My Reviews "For a budding Poulenc fan in the 1970s, this set was something of an unattainable treasure, a boxed set of LPs at full price and then some. When you're crazy about a particular composer, having a complete set of works in a particular genre just scratches a major itch, and this now-discounted set remains a great introduction to Poulenc's solo songs, the heftiest specific category of his output. EMI, called Angel in the US at the time, must have called in some favors to secure Elly Ameling for certain numbers better suited to women's voices, also Nicolai Gedda for Telle jour, telle nuit (my favorite cycle or group) and the eight Polish songs (folksolng arrangements totally new to me). Michel Senechal and Gerard Souzay bring indispensible native-speaker style to their interpretations, and while William Parker similarly gets the style right, he's vocally outclassed in this company. The BEST reason to get this set is Dalton Baldwin's piano scrumptious piano playing, a real object lesson in how to manage these sometimes-challenging accompaniments. Poulenc correctly regarded them as some of his best piano writing, so fans of his solo and chamber works for that instrument would do well to have Baldwin's exemplars on hand, also anyone called on to accompany a Poulenc song for the first time."
