As the Italian concerto style made its way over the Alps in the late 17th and early 18th centuries, J. S. Bach drank it in with gusto, quickly assimilating it and taking it to an unsurpassable level of artistry and sophistication. His prodigious output of keyboard concertos dates mostly from his years in Leipzig, where, in addition to his appointment at the Thomasschule, Bach directed the collegium musicum between 1729 and 1741. It was in that venue that Bach and his sons gave informal performances of the concertos.
Andrei Gavrilov's performances of the seven concertos recorded here are filled with warmth and easy finger dexterity. Gavrilov could not find a more musically supportive partner than Neville Marriner, who weds
