Notes and Editorial Reviews

Explosions of another kind thunder in accompaniment to Wanda Landowska’s Scarlatti, where wartime anti-aircraft guns punctuate the stately strains of Sonata K490. Recording merely three months before the fall of France, Landowska battled on regardless, her sonorous Pleyel harpsichord reigning supreme and recalling the happier worlds of flamenco dance and sultry Andalusian song. No wonder Tolstoy cried when he heard her play.

This References edition marks the latest transfer of these glorious performances recorded in Paris, 20 sonatas on the first disc in 1934, the others in 1940 when Nazi artillery was exploding on the fringes of the city—explosions fully audible in the sonata with
Read more which Side 3 begins. As I have noted previously in these pages, nowhere on disc is there such a confluence of the best and the worst in the human spirit: It remains a chilling experience to hear the German bombardment counterpointed to Landowska's playing, and I still get goose bumps listening to this extraordinary lady as she performs flawlessly, in effect thumbing her nose at the barbarism that is but a few miles from her.

Landowska's way with this music, for all of its pretense to authenticity, grew out of a 19th-century imagination, her harpsichord being far more sonorous than the instruments of Scarlatti's day and her execution wanting many of the niceties we have come to know as typical of Baroque performance-practice. But in response to these alleged shortcomings one can only say “so what?“ There is a vibrancy, drama, and musicality in Landowska's Scarlatti that wipes away all other considerations. Listen, for example, to the Sonata in E, L. 23 and you will hear playing of such remarkable color, control, and taste that other ways of performing the piece seem, for the moment at least, unimaginable.

Comparison of this new transfer to earlier American and Japanese Angel editions reveals no great differences. Surfaces here are slightly quieter without any significant loss of top. Where this pressing scores over its predecessors is in providing bands between each of the sonatas. Otherwise, there is no reason for those already owning these recordings to acquire it. Those who do not own them are missing, of course, one of the towering landmarks in phonographic history.

Scarlatti's Scarlatti April 12, 2015 By Gregory R. (Burlingame, CA) See All My Reviews "Wanda Landowska's Scarlatti is composer's vision fulfilled: brilliant, forceful, graceful, fascinating, genuine harpsichord performances that have never been surpassed. Piano interpretations and prettied harpsichord renditions seem trivial in comparison." Report Abuse
