Notes and Editorial Reviews
This time I have been readily convinced too that Previn's 1972 version of Belshazzar's Feast, recorded at the time of the composer's 70th birthday, is preferable to his more recent version on the RPO/ASV label. The bite of the choral sound and the closer focus make the result far sharper and more dramatic, even though some of the speeds are more spacious. I also prefer John Shirley-Quirk as soloist to the less firm Benjamin Luxon. The digital transfer is outstandingly good with fine bloom and plenty of weight. EMI also provide a more generous coupling, the two comedy overtures and the Improvisations instead of the Henry V suite.
