Notes and Editorial Reviews

To mark her seventy-fifth birthday EMI have produced this formidable tribute to Elisabeth Schwarzkopf's art. Each of these CDs is very generously filled and the transfers, with the few reservations expressed below, are well made. They provide an admirable conspectus of her extensive career of recording: the sheer breadth of the material is astonishing as is the consistency of the musical know-how shown...

The CD given over to arias is possibly the least satisfactory simply because practically all the sets from which these extracts have been taken are now available complete on CD. Still those who don't possess these will be pleased to hear her special gifts in Mozart and both Strausses. The most impressive performances here
Read more are the earlier of her versions of "Per pietà" ([French hornist Dennis] Brain again prominent), a faultlessly phrased account of "Es gibt em Reich" (with Karajan and the Philharmonia's sensuous accompaniment much to the fore) and the closing scene of Capriccio, where Schwarzkopf and Sawallisch bring out all the intensity of feeling in this purple passage.

-- Gramophone [12/1990, reviewing a series of Schwarzkopf reissues that includes Wolf Lieder (EMI 63653), Unpublished Recordings (EMI 63655), and Schubert, Schumann & Strauss Lieder (EMI 63656)]
