When these records were new between seven and eight years ago...they formed two Vox boxes encompassing everything Debussy wrote for solo pianist. In those days Vox used to bring out many compendious collections of that kind. In company with my colleagues, it was rarely that I could get very enthusiastic. But I remember these Peter Frankl records as an exception and it has been a pleasure to renew their acquaintance. I've played [them] all through again, checking my reactions, and I've found myself admiring Frankl as a Debussy player even more. Everything he does here marks him out as a musician of exceptional sensibility, intelligence and taste. The few reservations I had in 1963 seem largely to have disappeared... In fact I'm nowRead more particularly struck by the way he sustains line and continuity while giving rein to a quite fluid presentation of the music. Style in Debussy tends to veer one way or the other; Frankl's seems to me to steer a near-ideal course between the 'measured' and the more overtly 'atmospheric'. The requirements differ in different pieces of course; but a balance between the two is central to a good performance of the Preludes, of which I'm thinking in particular.
I am less happy than I was with the recorded sound, but that's hardly surprising. For one thing, I no longer like close piano balances as much as I used to. And the records were originally available only in mono: the reissued sound, though quite serviceable, hasn't much depth. Yet it has a fair dynamic range, and what I'd call a basic honesty, and doesn't need too many apologies. If you are as compelled by the playing as I am, I think you will willingly accept it.
