Notes and Editorial Reviews

Ned Rorem said that Julius Katchen had a technique that rivaled Horowitz’s. Regrettably, Katchen’s life was short; he died in 1969 in his 40s. It was also evidently tortured, unnecessarily by our standards, by his uneasiness with his homosexuality. It’s easy to put those issues aside when listening to Katchen’s magisterial renditions of Mozart, not a virtuoso task by his criteria, but challenging to any pianist who wishes to bring out the music’s expressive depths. The Concerto in D Minor, K 466, has previously been reissued; it is the piece with which Katchen made his debut at age 10. Also recorded in 1956, the earlier concerto in C, K 415, and the Six German Dances from 1961 are new to disc. Everywhere Katchen’s grace and tact are Read more evident. He is thankfully not given to fussing with Mozart’s phrasing, or with extreme pianistic ploys designed to make his interpretation unique. Rather, we have a Mozart that sounds not identical to other great performances, but distinctive and wholly pleasing. It helps that he is accompanied by an excellent conductor, Peter Maag, whose every recording among those I have heard is valuable.
