Notes and Editorial Reviews

Sacred music, from the earliest Gregorian chant to the music of the 21st century, has always been Chanticleer’s foundation. While our repertoire has grown to include every other kind of music, from all centuries, the music of, for, and about the church occupies a singularly important place in our artistic life.

It is a repertoire that does not stand still. In “The Boy Whose Father Was God,” Music Director Matthew Oltman conceived a journey through the life of the man who was Jesus, from the mischievous child to the man calling upon his followers, fomenting rebellion, and finally dying for his beliefs. The story is told in music dating from the mid-twentieth century to the present.

We asked three contemporary
Read more composers to help us flesh out the story; Ilya Ilyas, Peter Michaelides and Roxanna Panufnik each made highly original contributions. The program was premiered on March 26th, 2011, at the Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California with subsequent performances at San Jose’s Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph and Sacramento’s St. Francis of Assisi Parish Church. This recording was made before a capacity audience at the final performance in San Francisco’s magnificent Grace Cathedral on April 1st, 2011.
