Notes and Editorial Reviews

Brumel’s “Earthquake” Mass, for 12 voices, is one of those landmarks of Renaissance polyphony that everyone should own, and this is a wonderful performance of it. Okay, let me come clean: I admire this music more than I listen to it, and I have a sneaking suspicion that there are more than a few record collectors who feel as I do. Still, whenever I do listen to this stuff, I want to come away feeling guilty that I don’t do it more often, and this is one of those discs that will really grate on your conscience. Also, if you live in an apartment, it provides a welcome density of musical incident (those 12 voices!) but likely won’t annoy your neighbors. If this sounds like damning with faint praise, it’s not meant to—let’s just say that this Read more release remains a collector’s item, and leave it at that.
