MAHLER Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection” Pierre Boulez, cond; Diana Damrau (sop); Petra Lang (mez); German Opera Ch, Berlin; Staatskapelle Berlin EUROARTS 2054424 (Blu-ray: 89:00) Live: Berlin 3/2005

I reviewed the DVD release of this video in Fanfare 31:1, where it received a rating of “highly recommended.” Pierre Boulez clearly has the measure of this score, with a highly regarded CD featuring the Vienna Philharmonic already to his credit. As is his wont, Boulez’s interpretation is notable for the clarity of the orchestral textures, and especially the delineation of the inner voices.

This Blu-ray, however, is a game-changer. “Awesome” has unfortunately been rendered practically meaningless by overuse, but the sound in DTS-HD surround is truly awe-inspiring, particularly in the finale (I have never heard deeper or more reverberant low tones). Boulez has structured a final movement of Bernstein-like breadth, but where Bernstein can sometimes seem bloated, particularly in his last, live DG recording from New York, Boulez keeps the long line taut, and with every instrument clearly audible, Mahler’s colossal achievement is fully realized.

I continue to regard Claudio Abbado’s Lucerne Festival video with affection, particularly in its Blu-ray version; if forced to choose only one video Mahler Second to recommend, however, it would be this new Blu-ray disc. Outstanding.
