Notes and Editorial Reviews

To mark her 70th birthday, Decca has reissued several of Dame Joan's recordings... [M]y favourite of these issues is the 1969 Don Giovanni in which Bonynge, with the ECO, shows himself ahead of the time in his brisk approach to Mozart. Sutherland's Donna Anna is thrilling, but Gabriel Bacquier's Giovanni is a winner and there are Marilyn Horne's Zerlina and Pilar Lorengar's Elvira to ensure this is not a one-woman show.

Great recording and kudos to Arkiv MUsic May 21, 2016 By Frank Deale (Maplewood, NJ) See All My Reviews "This has always been my favorite Don Giovanni and I have tried many different versions. The singers are full of passion, whether singing or in dialogue. Of course, my views on that are totally subjective, but what is not is that this is the only recording of which I am aware that uses a small chamber ensemble, and Richard Bonynge commands it magnificently. All other recordings I am familiar with use full orchestras that often overwhelm the vocalists. I must complement Archiv Music for being the only source for a CD version of this wonderful old recording. And not only that - they kindly replaced it when, in may haste to open and enjoy it,I cracked disc 2 taking it out of its badly designed compartment." Report Abuse
Star studded Giovanni December 5, 2014 By Joseph Erdeljac (West Chester, PA) See All My Reviews "Here is a great cast performing a masterpiece with ease and precision. Sutherland is stellar as Elvira though of a bit heavier voice than her previous recording of this role. Bacquier is truly a fine interpreter of the Don and Lorengar is a firery Elvira. The Ottavio of Krenn is lovely and emotional. His is a voice that is not heard often enough. Horn as Zerlina is the surprise of the recording. It is amazing to hear the lightness of voice that she brings to this role, so much so that you ask yourself if this is really Horne singing. As usual Bonynge's leading of the orchestra and ensemble is commanding and well paced." Report Abuse
