Notes & Reviews Back to Top
This disc is reproduced from piano rolls played through a 1929 Hamburg
Steinway Duo-Art "B" player piano. Artur Rubinstein recorded these rolls between 1919-24.
For many, the mention of a player piano will conjure up images of a rattling honky-tonk, maybe even one in a saloon. If that is the case, then this recording of Duo-Art piano rolls of a young Arthur Rubinstein playing Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Falla, and Debussy will come as a revelation.
Upon listening to his performance of Chopin's Nocturne in F-sharp major, one will be struck both by the extreme delicacy of the piano and pianissimo passages and by the exquisite balance between the melody and the various accompaniment lines (in the alto, tenor, and bass registers). The lyrical episodes in both of the Brahms pieces sing out with startling directness. In Debussy's 'L'isle joyeuse,' articulation indications are scrupulously preserved, and its cascading passagework sounds vital and clear.
The entire recording is an unexpected delight. One will be hard pressed to distinguish the sound of these piano rolls from the sound of a live recording. In the case of Rubinstein, one can now hear what he sounded like at a time when recording technology was not up to snuff.
