Notes and Editorial Reviews

Robust and theatrical, making the most of the virtuosic display that the music provides in its pursuit of heady eroticism and high drama.

The overall approach here is robust and theatrical, making the most of all the possibilities for virtuosic display that the music provides in its pursuit of heady eroticism and high drama. In this the singers are ably supported by some fine string playing, beautifully shaped and phrased, as well as a luxuriant continuo grouping which includes theorbo, double harp, harpsichord and organ. There is some splendid singing too; Lambert Climent gives an eloquent account of the introduction to the ballo, the men give a splendidly characterized reading of "Gira il nemico", and
Read more Montserrat Figueras a persuasive account of the "Lamento della ninfa".

--------

We've had no shortage of these examples of Monteverdi's mature secular vocal music. The Eighth Book, published in 1638, was the first major collection prepared by the composer since 1619, but its contents go back as far as 1608, so it represents a broad view of the composer's work. The contents are more varied than the title would suggest if we think of a madrigal as the sort of five-voice song that is found regularly in the first six books. The book is divided into songs of war and songs of love, deliberately highlighted by the first piece in each half, the war song Let others Sing of Love and the love song that it parodied, Let others Sing of Mars.

In addition to at least three complete sets of the Eighth Book, the recent Consort of Musické (Fanfare 14:4 and 15:2), the older Raymond Leppard set (4:5), and the even older Edwin Loehrer set, we have had a good many single-disc collections. Coming close to matching the present program are Andrew Parrott (16:2), who duplicates five of the six pieces on this disc, and William Christie (5:2; CD in 8:2), who duplicates four of them—indeed, these pieces are on all three discs.

While these and other competing collections offer splendid interpretations, the strength of Jordi Savall's disc is the warm-sounding Mediterranean vocal ensemble. Its stellar member is Montserrat Figueras, but her voice by no means dominates the group, and one of the war songs, Gira il nemico, is set for three males voices only. Like a couple of Italian vocal groups that have recently entered the lists, these voices could never be mistaken for the Consort of Musické. I have praised the latter group's work at great length, but there is a different set of strengths, and true collectors will want to hear both approaches to Monteverdi.

The sound captured in a French church is lovely. The notes are useful, and texts come with translations. Highly recommended.

--------

The two albums brought together in this set, originally released in 1990 and 1994, firmly established Montserrat Figueras as one of the finest performers of the vocal music of Claudio Monteverdi. She forged a new path with her innovative style of interpretation, characterized by fidelity to the historical sources and an extraordinary creative and expressive power. Comprising the Arie e Lamenti and the Madrigali Guerrieri et Amorosi, this specially-priced set has been remastered for SACD and features Alia Vox's usual deluxe packaging and presentation.
