Notes and Editorial Reviews

Van Cliburn's playing of Liszt sounds so confident and so right that one suspects he must have learned to play this music early in life and from his mother, who was a student of a Liszt pupil. While his performance of Liszt's thrilling Sonata in B Minor bristles with energy and lyricism, what impresses more is the way Cliburn executes, with luminous clarity, a composition whose Herculean technical difficulties have frequently induced pianists to muddle through it. These well-intentioned pianists apply far too much sustaining pedal and, in the end, compensate for their technical shortcomings by creating a lot of banging noise. This is not the case with Cliburn, who brings his technical ease and interpretative control not only to the Sonata, Read more but also to a breathlessly manic performance of the 'Mephisto' Waltz. Again, however, the music never gets ahead of him, or he of the music, and the interior lyrical sections of the piece sound like the hypnotic eye of the storm. For those who have the impression of Liszt's music as being full of empty virtuosic show, this recording will come as a gratifying revelation. Read less
