Great Haydn disk! September 16, 2012 By Gail M. (Goleta, CA) See All My Reviews "Symphonies 23 and 24 are fairly early Haydn, and although very pleasant, don't have the memorable themes and complex development that characterizs Haydn at his peak. But #61 is a gem, with all the clever, jolly ideas for which this composer is known. The minuet could be by no other composer. Ward and his chamber orchestra play everything beautifully. The balancee dynamics, and pace of the playing fit the music perfectly, and excellent sound lets you hear all the details. These are NOT performances like some recent chamber orchestra releases, in which the tuneful themes are underplayed while the brass and drums are fierce." Report Abuse
