A composer of over 300 works for the keyboard (including the 153 pieces of Mikrokosmos), Bartok's roots were formed at the piano. At the age of six, he received his first piano lessons from his mother, and by the age of nine was writing down his own original compositions. While a student at the Budapest Academy of Music, he worked with a pianist who had studied with Franz Liszt. From his famous musical "grandfather," Bartok inherited the foundations of his pianistic language. Even though his natural pianism would undergo many stylistic changes from its 19th century roots to a newly found economy of expression, Bartok's love, respect and intimate knowledge of the keyboard are always in evidence. He revealed his most natural and adventurous Read more self when composing for the instrument he knew best; it was at the piano that he initially experimented with new techniques, later incorporated in many of his string quartets and orchestral works. We never think of Bartok as a "romantic," but certainly within his early piano works, emotions are more boldly expressed and a passionate heart clearly exposed- no protective layers to peel away in search of the composer's soul. Love and loss, mixed with a true passion for the piano, contribute to the wide emotional palette contained within the piano works featured on this recording. The grand 19th century bravura pianism, prominent in his early 1898 Sonata and also heard throughout his Op. 1 Rhapsody, reveals Bartok's strong link to his Lisztian heritage. The Two Elegies stride both worlds; the composer can be modernist and minimalist, without giving up his ties to romantic pianism. The Four Dirges, lamentations sparsely written in his new piano style, convey strong, direct, emotional statements. With the later Improvisations of 1920, Bartok succeeds in creating his own musical language; the old Hungarian peasant tunes become the catalyst for a uniquely personal idiom. Read less
