Laurence Gien was born in South Africa and began his musical education at the University of Cape Town. He continued his studies at the Hochschule fur Musik in Munich. He attended Lied classes and master classes given by Hans Hotter, Tom Krause, Brigitte Fasbaender and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In 1988 he made his debut as Erste Bursche in Carl Orff's Der Mond. Today he devotes a great amount of his energy to Oratorio and Lied. Alfons Kontarsky was born in 1932 and studied piano, chamber music and conducting in Cologne. In 1955, with his brother Alois Kontarsky he won first prize in the ARD Music Competition in the piano duets category. For years they traveled around the world as the Kontarsky Piano Duo.
