Notes and Editorial Reviews

If the folks at Angel want to claim that this is THE PERFECT BEETHOVEN collection, it will be hard to argue with them. From the urgency of the Fifth Symphony's opening to the serene repose of the 'Pathetique' Sonata's slow movement, from the rolling melodrama of the 'Coriolan' Overture to the rollicking wit of the Eighth Symphony's minuet, not to mention the miniature charms of 'Für Elise' and, of course, the heaven-storming grandiosity of the Ninth Symphony's "Ode to Joy," this disc does a splendid job of displaying the broad range of Beethoven's expression. And, given that the performers include Emil Gilels, Stephen Kovacevich, George Szell, Eugen Jochum, and Klaus Tennstedt, one could conclude that while definitions of perfection in Read more music are always debatable, this collection is perfect enough.
