Notes and Editorial Reviews

As a singer acclaimed for his outsized operatic talents, Bryn Terfel seems an unlikely source for exquisite performances of German song, especially the repertoire of the sensitive stylist Robert Schumann. Too often voices that easily fill the Metropolitan Opera have a difficult time with the much smaller scale and very different idiomatic demands of the song recital. Various large voices of the past have attempted to make the move to the recital stage with questionable results. On the other hand, many of the great song interpreters of the second half of the twentieth century--Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Elly Ameling, Gerard Souzay--occupied a marginal role in opera. But as Terfel's recording of Schubert songs indicated, one should not judge Read more this singer by the roles he covers.

Thankfully, Terfel seems to be the genuine exception to the rule. His unfailing attention to the poetic texts of these Schumann songs never sacrifices a buzzing legato line; forceful declamation never occurs at the expense of beautiful singing. And beautiful singing there is in abundance, from the delicate "Der Nussbaum" to the rousing "Die beiden Grenadiere." Malcolm Martineau's piano-playing is of equal beauty. Here is a truly great accompanist. Terfel and Martineau give Schumann's 'Liederkreis' a reading of heart-melting directness and tenderness

REVIEWS:

International Record Review (5/00, pp.104-105) - "...the extraordinary thing about Terfel's Lieder singing is just how individual it is....With Martineau's deeply musical accompaniment and a spacious, pristine DG recording, this impressive recital demands to be heard by all lovers of Schumann's songs."
