"Prosperity weaves no wreaths for mimes." This quotation once applied especially to singers. But maxims are not eternally valid, and records and tapes have preserved the voice of many an historical artist. However, old recordings often provide us with no more than the name of the artist. In the case of some presumably well-known singers, we frequently discover that little is known about their lives. The mezzo-soprano Marie-Luise Schilp, for example, enjoyed an excellent reputation during the 1930s and 40s. respect for not darkening her voice in the exaggerated manner that is so typical of mezzo-sopranos and altos. The brighter, natural quality of her voice makes the varied roles she played seem younger and more convincing than does the artificial vocal body of conventional altos. It is so very sad that most of the recordings she made for Hessian Radio were inexplicably erased, along with so many others from the early days of stereo. Read less
