Notes & Reviews Back to Top
At this writing, some 65 years after Ravel's death, very few people are still alive who actually heard him perform. One such individual is Drusilla Huffmaster Anderson, who recalled Ravel's performances in Houston, Texas on April 6 and 7, 1928. "As a very young and serious piano student, how fortunate I was to hear Ravel's music for the first time - played by the composer himself. I have a vivid memory of a very small man impeccably dressed. He played very well, but not being familiar with his music at that age, I thought he used a great deal of pedal. Of course this is necessary to sustain the sound of his music, but to my young ears, it seemed excessive. I also noticed that in difficult passages, he occasionally dropped a few wrong notes. Throughout the years of my musical career, I have come to understand Ravel's works. They are a large part of my performing repertoire, and give me great pleasure and inspiration."
