Sofronitzky’s recordings are legendary, and have been very hard to acquire. As Scriabin’s son-in-law, his interpretations of that composer’s works are of particular interest, and this three-disc set offers two full discs of them, including Sonatas Nos. 2, 3, 9, and 10, and a generous selection of shorter works: preludes, poems, etudes, and other pieces. You also get Borodin’s Petite Suite, Prokofiev’s Tales of an Old Grandmother, and a selection of Rachmaninov’s Moments musicaux and Études-tableaux. The recording dates (all live) range from 1946-60 and the sound quality varies widely from one selection to the next. Piano mavens won’t care, and neither do I. these pieces, but that’s not the point. Sofronitzky’s connection to Scriabin, his mastery of the idiom, and his feeling for the Russian romantic piano school more generally, was unique. Having these performances available at budget price is terrific.
