The ‘Trout’ Quintet was composed in 1819, during a happy period in Schubert’s life. He spent a holiday with friends in Steyr, south of Linz, and lodged at the house of Sylvester Paumgartner, a mine owner and amateur cellist. Paumgartner suggested that Schubert compose a piano quintet along the lines of one composed by Hummel in 1802 (Op.87, for piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass) – the friends were due to play Hummel’s work one evening. If it was Paumgartner’s suggestion to incorporate the song ‘Die Forelle’ (The Trout) it was an inspired one.
